I always thought I am not a fan of sprouts. I mean they are ok on a sandwich or in a salad but I don’t really care. Boy, I was wrong.
However, I like cress and thought it would be really nice to grow some, especially in winter. So I went to the Community Foods Store here in downtown Calgary to see if they have some. They didn’t have cress so I got seeds called Sandwich Booster from Mumm’s which is a mix of clover, alfalfa, radish and canola.
Growing sprouts is fairly simple. I bought a sprout master which is simply a plastic container with holes in the bottom for easy drainage. Cheap and easy to clean was the selling point for me. You soak one table spoon of seeds for a couple of hours and then spread them on one half of the sprout master. Just keep watering the seeds twice a day and make sure the water drains well.
At first I kept them in the dark but they weren’t crispy. So I moved them to a place where they get a little sun but not too much.
I just tried a handful of the sprouts on a sandwich and let me tell you, I am hooked. They have a nice tangy taste and are crisp but delicate. A true sandwich booster!
